BASEBALL GETS DIRTY AGAIN: Home Run Hero, McGwire, Confesses to Steroid Use (Guest Steinberg in Central Time)

NOTE: DUE TO LIMITED TIME, THIS GUEST IS ONLY AVAILABLE FOR NATIONAL RADIO AND TV INTERVIEWS.

He managed to dodge the question during his testimony before the House Government Reform Committee in 2005. But now, as Mark McGwire prepares a return to Major League Baseball as a coach, and as his statute of limitations has run out, the slugger who captured the nation with his record-breaking 70 home-run season in 1998 has come forward to confirm suspicion.

“I wish I had never touched steroids,” he said in a telephone confession to the Associated Press. “It was a mistake. I truly apologize.”

But in the immediate aftermath, while the sports media banters about such questions as whether or not this will affect McGwire’s chances of being inducted into the Hall of Fame, renowned sports psychologist Dr. Gregg Steinberg says the issue is screaming for a different and far more worthy debate—namely, how much damage is this rise of the “steroids era” having on our society.

“This has a huge trickle-down effect on our children,” says Steinberg. “This admission says that if you cheat and break the rules, you can become rich and famous. Children who play baseball and sport will believe that cheating is okay. Mark McGwire has faced little consequences from his illegal steroid actions. Now, he wants to come clean to settle the issue. But is that enough?”

After all the sports angles on this topic have run their course, prepare for a higher-level discussion.

As a guest on your show, Steinberg can comment on how steroid use under the lame-duck leadership of commissioner Bud Selig has tainted the sport of baseball. Plus, he can project on how we will likely view our “hero” athletes, past, present and future. And, with his passion for sports equal to his acumen in psychology, he can further provide an intriguing look at how steroid use affects those who fall victim to it—not only physically, but also mentally.
