AUTO INDUSTRY’S 2009 SPENT IN THE DITCH Analyst: Time to Call ‘Dad’ for Roadside Assistance (Robby Dilmore is in EST)

Image

An absolute linchpin in the American economy for some 100 years, there is nothing more reflective of our struggles in 2009 than the auto industry and, more specifically, the big “Detroit Three.”

Year-end numbers show Ford sales off 16 percent, and both Chrysler and General Motors off more than 30 percent each. Meanwhile, layoffs put a huge exclamation point on a 10-year tailspin trend line for U.S. car manufacturing jobs, which are down to 658,000 from 1.32 million in 1999.

And yet, according to industry analyst Robby Dilmore, a 35-year veteran of the automobile world and host of The Christian Car Guy radio program (heard nationally on Sirius channel 161), if the “Big Three” can find some humility, there is a colossal opportunity on the immediate horizon . . . to the East.

“It’s time for the U.S. to start looking to the Chinese and Indian automotive markets,” says Dilmore. “China’s is now larger than our own. And, get this. While the Americans have more than two cars per family, the Chinese have 1.2 cars for every 1,000 people. The potential for car sales in China and India is staggering.”

And how exactly do we attack such an unfamiliar market? Dilmore says, “History has the answer. Henry Ford set out to build a car that the average American could afford, and he put thousands to work doing it. Were we to . . . start fresh with simply the only option to build a car that THE WORLD could afford, we would put millions to work.”

Get Dilmore’s full prescription for a renewed automotive industry success in the next decade. And find out what he means when he says it’s time for “Detroit to turn to ‘Dad’ for some answers.”
