UNHERALDED IN HAITI World Largely Ignores Israel’s Earthquake Relief
Israel’s political track record on the world stage usually involves some kind of defense, twice over. First, it must defend itself against Arab aggression—perhaps some unprovoked missile attack or terrorist attempt. Then, it must defend itself against the international community’s criticism for its retaliation.
So, when Israel’s recent humanitarian efforts in the aftermath of Haiti’s devastating earthquake have gone largely unreported among the global media, many familiar with this constant double-standard have not been surprised.
Among them is Avi Lipkin, a former member of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and a former translator inside the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office.
In reality, Israel has been a leading first responder in Haiti, setting up that country’s only operating field hospital, which is considered the “Rolls Royce” of medicine in that region right now and is treating roughly 500 patients a day. In addition, Israel has also deployed a fully staffed search-and-rescue team.
With his experience in the IDF—Israel’s army contingent conducting the rescue efforts in Haiti—Lipkin is uniquely qualified to provide a genuine assessment of Israel’s impact on the situation, and can comment on the IDF’s truly distinctive expertise.
“It’s a sad truth, but a fortunate one in this case,” says Lipkin. “Because of the history of bombings that Israel has had to endure over so many years, the IDF is, quite likely, the most experienced unit on the ground in Haiti following this remarkable destruction . . . from finding survivors to treating such a high volume of injuries.”
To get both an IDF and a political perspective on Israel’s role in Haiti—and the lack of international recognition for it—call Special Guests today to schedule an interview with Avi Lipkin. His view is always enlightening and informative.
